The name ‘Darjeeling’ came from the Tibetan words, ‘dorje’ meaning thunderbolt (originally the sceptre of Indra) and ‘ling’ a place or land, hence ‘the land of the thunderbolt’.
At 7000 feet above sea level, sitting shy on a long, narrow mountain ridge of the Eastern Himalayas, Darjeeling remains carefully tucked away by surrounding Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan. With her neighbours and their rich culture, coupled with her own colonial past, Darjeeling emerges as a destination with so much more on offer beyond tea and trails.
With a pluralistic ethnic diversity, music that echoes across its hills and gastronomic delights that envelop whole rooms in a warm-fuzzy embrace – here’s an invitation to explore Darjeeling beyond the typical.
